The Surly cassette-type cog are designed to fit on standard Shimano compatible freehub bodies. These cogs have a tall tooth profile that is essential for preventing chain skip from the extra torque a singlespeed drivetrain encounters.
In addition to being a stellar SS cog, the cog base width (where it contacts the freehub body) is 4.35mm, so you can stack a few of them up and use a 9-speed shifter for a simplified multi-speed drivetrain. This width also prevents it from ruining the freehub body as a result of digging grooves into it like skinny stamped cogs have a tendency to do. Surly cogs are machined from SCM415 CroMoly steel, then heat-treated for toughness and chrome-plated for surface hardening and enhanced chain lubricity. Our cogs will work with 6-9-speed 3/32" chains, although we recommend the inherently updated quality of an 8 or 9 speed chain. They are also available in every increment from 17-22t, so you can select that perfect gear.
Note: Teeth profiles are straight forward, making them ideal for Single Speed applications however, with no twists or ramps etc the gear shifting will not be as slick as with regular Shimano cogs when used in a multiple cog lineup.
Note: When used in non-9 set-up, additional Cassette spacers will be required to fill the cassette body.
Cassettes and freewheels for bikes are a cluster of sprockets in a range of sizes offering a multitude of gear ratios. The difference between the two is, a cassette slots onto the freehub, which has the ratchet built in and is then secured with a lockring, whereas a freewheel is a cluster of sprockets built around a ratchet and threads directly on to the hub. Cassettes and freewheels come in many ratios, close ratio is when the number of teeth increase in small increments of 1 or 2 at a time, whereas a wide ratio is when the teeth increase in larger increments of 3 or 4 at a time. Most systems will use a cassette hub as these allow for a wider bearing spacing and increased axle life, you can also fit a larger quantity of sprockets onto a cassette hub with 11 speed systems now becoming available. With cassettes you must use the appropriate spacing for your gear levers and rear mech, Shimano and Campagnolo are not interchangeable so you will need to match the cassette to your levers for smooth and precise shifting. Sram and Shimano chains and cassettes will work together as they use the same spacing.
